Japanese fashion style that peaked in the 2000s. Although it has generally declined in real life, it remains popular in anime and fanart.

It has many diverse substyles, but typically involves tanned skin, styled and colored hair (sometimes bleached blonde), trendy and often sexy clothing, and heavy gyaru makeup, with a focus on false eyelashes, enlarging the eyes, contouring, ear rings and/or ear piercings.

Two common elements of gyaru looks, especially in anime and manga representations, are tanned skin and bleached hair, sometimes with highlights or gradient hair. However, not every gyaru has tanned skin or bleached hair, and not every character with tanned skin and bleached hair is a gyaru.

Gyaru are usually depicted as energetic or extroverted. In adult media they may be depicted either as a high-school student prostitute or as having an unusually high sex drive.
