desk

An elevated horizontal surface (usually made of wood) used for writing, reading, using a computer, etc. which are often accompanied by a chair.

There are many types of desk ranging from a simple flat surface raised on four legs, to more elaborate designs with drawers, multiple tiers, L-shaped layouts, etc. A great majority of desks are similar to tables in that they stand on their own and have a surface to place objects on. It is, however not necessary for a desk to have a free open area, and it can be just a surface that can even be moved and placed elsewhere.

A desk has typically dedicated sides, such as the working side and the client side. This is a distinction to a typical table. This also applies to a counter, which differs from desk by being an unmovable fixture.
