Due to old code remnant only the Janitors and higher ranks can see the uploader name directly on the post's page.
However any logged in user can indirectly see that as well by entering the History>Tags/Desc and scrolling down to the post version XYZ:1 - that user is always the original uploader (but not nessesarly the director of the image)
I remember this being a thing on e621 ages ago, then it got removed at some point.
Guess that's an old E621 remnant, yes. They disabled them years ago (though recently seem to have re-added them for certified artist accounts) because a few people apparently kept confusing the uploader for the artist or some shit.
And there were rare instances of idiots being overprotective of 'their' art, like them being supposed to be THE one uploading stuff from artist-X. But that was really uncommon.
Still think it's dumb. Now nobody that's unaware of the history button can address the uploader. And without your name being visibly attached to a post, there's way less intrinsic motivation to maintain high standards when it comes to tagging, sourcing and even copying (and often reformatting to DText) the description from said source.
At least, that's the effect it had on me. Who's gonna call you out for half-assing it? Seeing your name next to a really well-sorted post also just... well it gives a little dopamine hit for some weird reason. :/

not the reason
was because of "upload sniping" and some pesky uploaders trying to upload it before the artist and just being a nuisance because even if they did the artist still had the superior version because no compressions and others, and having fights over other uploaders for being "the first to upload haha i win"
which still happens to this day(it happened to me when i used to upload on e621)
tho that reason is actually the reverse because now people always seems to think that the artist is the one uploading when it's just another uploader, even saying artists have an account on e621 when it's actually just the tag, these people are either stupid and don't understand how e621 works or are a minor(usually the latter)

Oh yes, that definitely too. Or maybe it was the only actual reason, now that you mention it. Been a while, my memory's a bit hazy.

That's actually a very good point and seems like it'd be a more frequent issue than my own first argument.
