Topic: A talk about ambient critters

Posted under General

At the present we have several ambient_* tags in the Species category and I see 2 problems with them;

The foremost, I think they shouldn't be species; they should be general tags. Here we talk about critters that adds some form of living/dynamic feeling a bit like falling leaves, snow, particles of fires, etc. They are related to their species, but they shouldn't be considered "species" tags.

The second is more a pet peeve of mine: each ambient tags implies their respective species. The thing is the tag is then kind of meaningless as a training tag: there's noise between the miniscule pixelated ambient critter and a full sized, detailed persona/fursona/subject.

They still represent an animal species so that's why it's still a species category tag

Hence why I wanted to talk about it. I agree that they relate to the specie, but I disagree that they represent it. A swarm of firefly is a swarm, not a firefly. I mean, I'll undermine my second point here, and concede that in the case of a change the implication are probably better staying, but I completely disagree that swarms should be considered species. That's not a thing, you'll not see in the tree of life "swarms of .." as a specie.

Such discussions are better taken to e621, as this tagging system is primarly engineered by them, and we mostly follow it for compatibility
