I’m not sure if anyone talked about this before or if the answer is obvious, but I’d like to have some clarity on this topic.

Let’s say you found an image made by an anonymous maker on a website like desuarchive.org and it has several anomalies in it (such as bad anatomical features, artifacts, weird text, or others). Are users allowed to edit / fix such images and upload them here? If so, how much of it can you edit? And are there tags you must use to say it’s an edited version of the original source image?

Obviously I’m not going to take credit for generating the image itself and will tag it with unknown_director or anonymous_director if it were to be uploaded here.

P.S. I don’t have Discord, so any help here would be highly appreciated.

I suppose you can think of desuarchive as a sort of landfill, with tremendous ammount of trash mixed with occasional gems.
You being a trash sorter can decide yourself how much you want to fix the gem to restore it to it's "original" (e6ai compatible) form, while also keeping the respect to the original anon's rendition _{[not-example being Ecce Homo Restoration]}

All anons post their gens on anonymous boards will full knowledge that their gens are throwaways that will vanish in the endless sea of slop by the next day, so if anything - overall most of anons would be pleased to know that someone liked their gens enough to bother fixing them up for them, and archiving them here.
(If some might not like it, they can always come to us and request a takedown/removal ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ )
Sometimes some anons might see you uploading their gens, and then start doing it themselves, which is always nice to see.

So yeah, there's no limit of how much you can edit an image, but it's generally considered good practice to fix it up just enough for it to pass our quality guidelines (such as bad anatomical features, artifacts, weird text, etc). Just try to use same/similiar artist-mix to not butcher the image's style (too much).

You can add tags such as Edit or similiar ones, but it's best to not use it for simple tweaks, only major ones like fur color change, species swap, etc.
As for the creator tag, unknown_director or anonymous_director is fully sufficient.

I wouldn’t call myself ‘trash sorter’ though. 😅 But yeah, I came across some hidden gems that might be worth uploading here after some tweaks.
