    But seriously, yeah, I also really like seeing artwork like this where the clothing actually conforms properly to the body.

    That's the Milky Way, or a stylized representation of it.

    If you're out in the middle of nowhere (Like truely) with no lights at all, it is possible to see the clouds of the Milky Way. Better with long exposure camera shots, but the naked eye could see a faint glimpse of the gas clouds.
