I spent some more time thinking about it today, and it also strikes me that her hairstyle is a bit like Rita’s (Oliver & Company).
So, for now, I see her as something of a cross between Elora and Rita.

    TL;DR:
Nvidia and Valve hired, AMD fired.

    -----

From what I understand AMD's ROCM uses this thing called HIP (Heterogeneous Interface for Portability) to be source-compatible with CUDA programs, so a dev doesn't have to write an AMD ROCM version of their program from scratch or rewrite their Nvidia CUDA code. They just compile the CUDA version and compile the same code again but for ROCM then call it a day. My Radeon actually shows up in Krita as "[CUDA] 0 AMD Radeon Graphics (16GB)". This whole HIP thing must not be perfect, because Krita will often just close out of nowhere or the PC crashes entirely. It's so bad that I set Krita's autosave feature to run every two minutes, and even then I'm so leery I'll occasionally just mash the save icon several times whenever I think about it.

Nvidia certainly knew what they were doing by investing in software engineers back in the day so CUDA was ironed out before OpenCL ever had a chance to take off in the GPU compute space.

As for Vulkan support, yes AMD's RADV driver on Linux works great these days. However that's because years ago Valve was hiring Linux devs to work on RADV, while AMD fired all but one of their Linux driver devs... only to later drop support for their Linux Vulkan driver entirely and tell people to just use Valve's RADV instead because it's built into Linux and works better anyway.

It's possible that AI devs could make Vulkan versions of their apps which would run on AMD, Intel, Nvidia, and other vendor GPUs without much trouble. However this would require those devs to maintain another code base in addition to their already established CUDA code, and such programmers aren't well known to be working for free.

In hindsight the Nvidia GeForce 5060 Ti 16GB would've been the more reliable option for AI work, but it came out a year later, was $100 more, and the drivers wouldn't be open source.

Thanks you for this detailed explanation, it helps understand why people are still fighting to keep buying NVidia GPUs. Supply is already scarce enough, so seeing other chip makers not giving their products the support it deserves sure is frustrating.

Leejet's stable-diffusion.cpp has the Vulkan backend, and is absolutely bare-metal, command-line based. Sometimes I wish there was ComfyUI nodes that would call it as a tool for generating common stuff (pictures, videos), it would've opened AI generation to quite a few more GPUs (non-NVidia, or older but high-end,...). And probably worked with open-source drivers, including Nouveau, I tested it and it seemed to work decently.

I also missed on the Nvidia GeForce 5060 Ti 16GB train, but even at its original MRSP, it was a bit pricey for merely generating bad videos faster, so 5050 it is, right before it became unaffordable too.

2026 (and 2027, even 2028?...) truly be like >the best GPU is the one you have with you.

Is AMD support so bad? I've always been curious about this, actually.

If ComfyUI added support for some sort of Vulkan backend, it would probably solve a few problems, it works almost universally for modern GPUs
