    To save food and to feed the stronger dogs, not even the cats survived on that trip. Most of the dudes who went on that trip had long lasting PTSD for sacrificing the dogs, pretty much normal considering you spent months with them and watched the pups born an grow, if they survived. Except for the Norwegians explorers apparently, since they were a bit more utilitarians with the dogs at the time, if they outlived their usefulness then it's just another source of food, stoic people indeed.

    Yeah, a lot here is just post-processing. I simply blurred the tail with PS.
