Videocassette recorder

From Wikipedia:

The videocassette recorder (or VCR, also known as the video recorder), is a type of electro-mechanical device that uses removable videocassettes that contain magnetic tape for recording analog audio and analog video from broadcast television so that the images and sound can be played back at a more convenient time.

While the VCR is most commonly associated with the VHS format and is sometimes used interchangeably as "VHS" (which is incorrect), it was not exclusive to it, as competing videotape technologies (mainly, Betamax) also had their own VCRs respective to their formats. As the DVD format released in the late '90s, the VCR, along with the VHS format, would subsequently lose market share over the years following DVD's rise in popularity.
