Meta: stereogram

A stereoscopic image or animation. This is to give the illusion of depth to the viewer, most of the time by presenting two slightly offset images to both eyes individually.

Formats

  • side_by_side_stereogram - Side by side images that are meant to be viewed directly or with equipment
    • cross_eye_stereogram - Viewed by crossing your eyes. Left eye's image is on the right side. Usually vertical images.
    • wall_eye_stereogram - Viewed without crossing your eyes. Left eye's image is on the left. This includes side by side images (also known as parallel) and magick eye images.
      • Random-dot and repeating-image stereograms can be either cross eye or wall eye.
  • anaglyph - Images made with two primary filter colors, usually red/cyan, viewed trough colored glasses.
  • wiggle_stereogram - Stereo images showing the depth by rapidly showing the two images or moving the image using depthmap.
  • MPO - Standard filetype for stereograms used with electronic devices including Nvidia 3D Vision, Nintendo 3DS, HTC Evo 3D, Google Cardboard, 3D TVs, etc. Not supported by e621. JPS is simply renamed JPG image which has image wall eye side by side.

Preferred formats are cross_eye_stereogram and wall_eye_stereogram as there is no quality or color loss and it can be viewed directly without extra equipment. Anaglyph is one of the most popular formats, however with that color data is lost, making images colors look bit greenish/grayish and it can't be converted into other formats properly.

Not to confuse:

  • Two similar looking images being side by side DOES NOT automatically mean that the image is stereogram.
    • If images have something different, e.g. character being clothed on first and nude on second image, use multiple_versions instead.
    • If images have other slight differences, e.g. parts of it being zoomed instead of being looked at slight different angles, use edit and multiple_versions. This includes bad attempts of stereograms.
  • If an image looks like anaglyph, but only has really small highlight of red/blue colors and/or if the colors move exactly same amount in the whole image making it have flat depth, it's most likely chromatic_aberration instead.

Viewing and converting

You can see format specific wiki articles for more in depth instructions for viewing the images.

If you have trouble viewing the content or want to convert the file into format you can see, you can use regular image manipulation program for side by side and wiggle content as the content of both images are identical in all methods - simply the way they are watched differs. For wider range of formats and tools, including converting to MPO format, use StereoPhoto Maker.
