Abstract: It is well documented that monsters and other beasts are usually found in high concentrations in dungeons, ruins, and other underground areas. The reasons for these high densities, however, have not been rigorously explored. This paper examines the phenomena, through a combination of data analysis, behavioural studies, and direct observation. Common urban myths surrounding this behaviour are examined and refuted, such as ‘evil’ locations attracting ‘evil’ creatures, or the spontaneous generation of beasts from high magic concentrations. It is posited that these high creature densities arise for more mundane reasons, including social interaction, pack behaviour, and particularly for breeding purposes.
