Description

The skeletons surrounded her, clawing at her from all sides in the dark crypt.

Saffron spun, her sword cleaving through another ribcage, when the bony fingers closed around her shoulder from behind. She felt the cold grip through her chainmail, the pressure of its claws finding purchase in the gaps between metal rings.

"Get off—!" She twisted, torch sweeping in a wild arc, but the skeleton held fast. Its other arm snaked around her front, clawing at her chest to rip at her heart, bony fingers hooking into her armor instead.

The metal held for a heartbeat. Then she heard the ancient rings snapping under strain. The skeleton pulled backward with inhuman strength, and Saffron felt herself being dragged, her body arching involuntarily as the armor resisted... then failed.

Rings scattered like silver rain, glinting in the torchlight as they flew through the air. The chainmail tore away completely, leaving her exposed. Cold crypt air hit her fur and flesh. She gasped, shock flooding her system, but there was no time—another skeleton was lunging.

Saffron snarled, rage overriding embarrassment. She spun into the hold, bringing her sword around in a vicious arc. Steel met bone at the wrist.

The armless skeleton staggered. Saffron didn't hesitate. She drove her torch into its skull, shattering bone, then kicked the collapsing remains backward into two more advancing skeletons.

She stood panting, chest heaving, exposed and suddenly aware of every smear of bone dust and soot splattered across her body in dark streaks.

Another skeleton reached for her. Saffron bared her teeth, sword ready, her free arm crossing instinctively to cover herself—then she thought better of it. Survival first. Modesty was a luxury she couldn't afford.

"Come on then," she growled, lowering into a combat stance, her tail lashing behind her. The torchlight caught her violet eyes, fierce and wild, as she prepared to fight on — armor or no armor.
