Description

The Black Market: There are two sides to the shadow market - tax evasion and contraband. For the latter, as Midria is a deeply hedonistic society, contraband policy largely revolves around dangerous magic such as certain Old World relics, hyper-potent reagents, chrysmer crystals, and lethal bootleg concoctions like unregulated poisons. But by far, most unregulated trading simply comes down to skirting around tariffs, particularly for small, high-value items that are easy to sneak into town. Notably, as the chirlings are the only species that can actually fly, they've been known to casually pull this off. And with their hypersensitive hearing and flight capabilities, few ever get caught.

Extra lore: Chrysmer crystals?

For most of history, it has been a base truth that crystals are fundamentally incapable of tendril magic - the type of magic needed to interact with the world around you, such as moving an object across the room. Only a living creature can direct and weave those tendrils. The Old World of the previous age changed all this with the breakthrough invention of organic, living crystals known as chrysmer. So long as it's exposed to sunlight, chrysmer will grow not unlike a plant, though at such a glacial speed that it's impractical over a typical lifespan. The empire of old had a method to speed up this process, but they took that secret to the grave. Nowadays, most governments consider chrysmer too dangerous for the free market. Scavengers of the Ghostlands often find loads of the stuff and are expected to turn it over to the authorities, but the lure of black market pricing can be tempting.

Furthermore, chrysmer may also be circulated as chrysling sand - the broken-down, powdered form generally used for rune glyphs. As the powdered version looks very similar to petrosylabite at a glance, it's a popular medium for smuggling. Chrysmer that has been starved of sunlight will eventually die and become black chrysmer, which also has its uses as an alternative to diamond.
