Description

The room was lit entirely by the television and the tiny string lights tacked up along Sol’s wall like a constellation that had given up halfway.

On-screen, two demon avatars exploded into motion.
“NO NO NO NO—DON’T DROP THE COMBO—”

Sol leaned forward so hard her swivel chair creaked in protest. Her glasses slid halfway down her muzzle. Her tail bristled like an overcaffeinated fox plume.

Loona sat sideways on the edge of the unmade bed, chin in her hand, watching with the expression of someone observing paint dry in slow motion.

“You said,” Loona began slowly, “we were gonna hang out.”

“We are hanging out,” Sol snapped without looking away from the screen.

Her fingers flew across the controller with alarming precision. For someone who routinely tripped over her own tail walking down hallways, she suddenly had surgeon-level coordination.

On-screen, her character launched an absurdly long aerial chain.

“YES. YES. JUGGLE. JUGGLE—DON’T YOU DARE TECH OUT—”

Loona blinked.

“…What language are you speaking.”

Sol’s ears flattened in concentration.

“It’s neutral control,” she muttered, eyes blazing red in the screen’s glow. “If I win this set I break into top two hundred in the Abyssal Bracket.”

There was a dramatic explosion of pixelated fire.

The words COUNTER HIT flashed across the TV.

Sol let out a small, feral sound.

Loona sighed and flopped back on the bed.

She had come over to hang out. Maybe watch something. Maybe get food. Maybe complain about life. Instead she had been staring at the same match-up for twenty-seven minutes while Sol whispered arcane gamer incantations.

Another explosion. Another combo string.

Loona rolled onto her stomach and propped her chin on her hands.

“…You good?”

Sol didn’t blink.

“Shh.”

“Right. Support mode.”

Loona straightened slightly, forcing herself into Encouraging Best Friend Posture.

“You got this,” she said flatly.

On-screen, Sol’s avatar parried a massive demonic axe swing at the last possible frame.

Sol’s entire body jolted.

“FRAME PERFECT.”

Loona stared.

The timid, clumsy Sol who apologized to vending machines when she bumped into them had vanished.

In her place was a battlefield tactician.

Her posture sharpened. Her tail flicked in tight, controlled movements. Her ears angled forward with predatory precision.

“You are not zoning me out,” she muttered at the screen, voice low and steady. “I labbed this match-up for six hours.”

Loona’s brow lifted slightly.

“…You labbed it.”

“Yes.”

Another flash of light.

Another combo.

The opponent’s health bar dipped dangerously low.

Sol’s breathing slowed. Focused. Calm.

“Bait the burst… bait it…”

The opponent tried to escape.

Sol countered instantly.

The screen erupted in victory fireworks.

KO.

For a second, silence.

Then Sol threw both arms into the air.

“YES! YES! I’M IN TOP TWO HUNDRED!”

Her swivel chair spun halfway around as she celebrated, nearly knocking into her desk.

Loona caught the back of the chair with one paw to steady her.

“…You’re gonna break your spine.”

Sol blinked.

The intense warrior aura evaporated.

She looked down at her hands like she’d just woken up from a trance.

“I—I did it,” she said softly.

Loona’s expression shifted.

Not bored now.

Not annoyed.

Just… fond.

“Yeah,” she said, a small smirk tugging at her muzzle. “You did.”

Sol’s tail wagged once. Twice. Then she seemed to remember something.

“Oh my gosh I’m so sorry,” she blurted. “You came over to hang out and I’ve just been grinding ranked for like an hour and you must be so bored and I totally—”

Loona flicked her ear.

“Relax dork.”

She nudged Sol’s shoulder.

“You looked cool.”

Sol froze.

“…I did?”

“Yeah. Kinda scary, actually.”

Sol’s cheeks flushed under her fur.

“I’m not scary.”

“You were literally growling at the screen.”

“I was not.”

“You absolutely were.”

Sol huffed, crossing her arms.

“…It was a strategic growl.”

Loona snorted.

“Whatever you say, top two hundred.”

Sol tried to hide the smile tugging at her muzzle.

“…You wanna try a round?”

Loona stared at the controller.

Then at the screen.

Then at Sol.

“…If I get destroyed, I’m blaming you.”

Sol grinned—shy, but proud.

“I’ll coach you.”

Loona grabbed the spare controller.

“Fine. But if I win, I’m calling it natural talent.”

Sol laughed.

The TV flickered ominously.

A flaming logo slammed onto the screen:

INFERNAL FIGHTERS: NETHER TOURNAMENT XTREME EDITION

Chains clanked. A demonic choir screamed. Someone somewhere got suplexed into a volcano.

Loona stared at it.

“…That’s the name.”

Sol sat forward again, but this time she was calmer. Focused, but not feral. Coach mode engaged.

“It’s the Xtreme Edition,” Sol said, adjusting her glasses. “They added three new frame traps and nerfed Hellripper’s mid-screen carry.”

Loona blinked.

“Okay, I understood zero of that.”

“That’s fine,” Sol replied quickly, scooting her chair closer. “You don’t need all the meta stuff yet.”

She pointed at the character select screen.

A lineup of absurd demons posed dramatically: blade-winged assassins, lava giants, cursed idols, skeletal monks.

Loona’s eyes narrowed.

“Which one’s the fastest.”

Sol smiled faintly.

“That one.” She pointed to a sleek, black-clad demon with scythe-shaped energy blades. “High mobility. Aggressive rushdown. Very… you.”

Loona selected it instantly.

The character spun dramatically, cape snapping in infernal wind.

“Okay,” Sol said, turning slightly so she could see Loona’s controller. “Basic controls first. This button is light attack. This one’s medium. This one’s heavy. This—”

Loona mashed all of them at once.

The character flailed wildly on screen.

Sol winced.

“Okay. Okay. We do not mash.”

Loona shot her a look.

“It worked when you did it.”

“I did not mash.”

“You absolutely mashed.”

“That was optimized pressure.”

“Mm-hmm.”

Sol inhaled slowly. Patient gamer mentor energy activated.

“Think of it like… rhythm. It’s not button smashing. It’s timing. You want to feel the impact.”

Loona glanced at her.

“…Feel it.”

“Yes.”

On screen, the AI opponent advanced.

“Okay,” Sol continued, leaning closer, her tail brushing against the edge of Loona’s boot. “Tap light twice. Then medium. Then special.”

Loona tried.

Light.

Light.

Medium—

Her character launched a clean combo.

Sol’s ears perked.

“Yes! See? That’s it!”

Loona smirked.

“…Okay that felt kinda sick.”

“It is sick,” Sol said, a tiny grin breaking through her usual timid composure. “Now watch their movement. Don’t just look at your character. Read theirs.”

The opponent jumped.

Loona panicked and mashed heavy attack.

Her character whiffed dramatically and got slammed into the ground.

“OW—”

“That’s called being anti-aired,” Sol said gently.

Loona stared at the screen.

“…You sound proud.”

“I am. That was educational.”

Loona snorted.

“Shut up.”

Sol leaned in even closer now, pointing at the screen.

“Okay, see how they like to jump after blocking? That’s a habit. We punish habits.”

Loona raised an eyebrow.

“We?”

Sol’s tail flicked once.

“Team effort.”

The next exchange began.

Opponent jumped.

Loona waited.

Just a second.

Then pressed the correct button.

Her character uppercut them clean out of the air.

COUNTER!

Loona’s eyes widened.

“…I did that.”

“You did that,” Sol confirmed, glowing faintly with pride.

Loona glanced sideways at her.

“You’re kinda intense when you teach.”

Sol flushed.

“I—sorry.”

“No. It’s cool.” Loona leaned forward now, matching Sol’s posture unconsciously. “You get all focused and scary.”

“I do not get scary.”

“You were growling earlier.”

“That was tactical.”

“Sure.”

They both smirked.

The match intensified.

Loona dropped a combo.

Sol didn’t criticize.

“Reset neutral. Breathe. You don’t have to win this round.”

Loona inhaled, exhaled.

For someone who usually mocked “boring fighting games,” she was now laser-focused.

The final exchange.

Health bars low.

Sol whispered, “Wait for it…”

The opponent lunged.

Loona blocked.

Then punished.

The screen exploded in infernal fireworks.

VICTORY.

Loona stared at it.

“…Okay. That was kinda awesome.”

Sol beamed, trying not to bounce in her seat.

“You read them.”

“I read them,” Loona echoed, impressed with herself.

There was a beat.

Then she bumped Sol’s shoulder lightly.

“…Thanks.”

Sol’s ears lifted.

“For what?”

“For not letting me mash.”

Sol smiled softly.

“You’d be really good if you kept playing.”

Loona leaned back, smirking.

“Careful. I might take your top two hundred spot.”

Sol froze dramatically.

“…You wouldn’t.”

Loona picked up the controller again.

“Start another round, Coach.”

Sol grinned.

And this time, when they leaned toward the screen, they did it in sync.
