Description

Major Hayes — now Colonel Hayes — took this one in 1944, after an honorable discharge from an illustrious career serving in three wars (World War I, the Emu War, and World War II), having to retire after being wounded in New Guinea two years earlier (thus, the scar under her eye; the half of her face that isn't in the camera is scarred worse).

By this point in her life, she was beginning to actually enjoy showing off her body; even if she was getting on a bit in years (being age 49 here), and her old war injuries still acted up sometimes, she was still in good health, and was proud of that fact. This was the first photo she took after her recovery, and wouldn't be the last.
