Topic: Error when uploading a video. Seems like a bug on site.

Hi

When uploading a 2 minute long video I get "error: failed uploading". I retried, changed browser, re-logged.

I re-exported the video so it had just 85MB
I lowered the resolution.

No change.

I tested by uploading a short video with exact same codec settings. This worked. I tried uploading the long video again. Error.

This is what I'm seeing in the browser console:

/uploads.json:1 Failed to load resource: the server responded with a status of 524 ()

Could share the video? Upload it somewhere else and share a link.

Don’t the admins have access to logs they can check? Anyway, I’ll DM you about it since I don’t want to waste any more time. Hope you don't mind.

Hopefully the admins can figure out what’s going wrong and fix the bug, so I can actually upload it on upcoming Monday morning.

I'm not seeing any exceptions, and the video uploads normally on a local instance of the site. I'll try to upload it later.

I appreciate the helping effort. Thank you.

I’m pretty sure you’ll run into the same error when trying to upload it to the website, but just in case, here are a few ideas about what might be causing it:

Maybe it has something to do with how long the upload takes. My upstream connection is slow.
Maybe it’s related to using a VPN.

Another possibility is that uploads are automatically scanned and something is being incorrectly flagged. I can think of three things in the video that definitely shouldn’t violate the upload guidelines, but could potentially trigger a fa;se positive by a simple AI-based or algorithmic check. Part of the video is a parody of a TV commercial. There's “bloopers” section where a 2–3 second portion of one clip is repeated twice, and the word “commercial” is written on the clapperboard.

I did have an issue once with an MP4 not being accepted because it contained an included thumbnail, but I’m almost certain the error in that case was “unsupported format.”
This video now was exported from Shotcut and is a .WebM, without anything like that as far as I know. Unless Shotcut somehow added a thumbnail to .WebM file based on one of the clips I used in the project.

It's most likely a connection speed issue, if you have a slow upload speed. It could be timing out. You should try disabling your VPN.

There is no such automatic scanning and flagging on uploads. That's just not something the site does.

The MP4 format support issue was fixed.

Was the bug fixed?

My internet connection wasn’t unstable. It can be slow at times, but I don’t think it was slow enough to make that explanation likely. You could also try limiting the connection speed on your end to reproduce the conditions to rule this possibility out.

I attempted the upload multiple times. My connection is typically somewhere between 5 and 15 Mbit/s, and I’d expect that at least one of my attempts was above 10 Mbit/s. That’s over 1 MB/s, which should put a 75 MB upload at roughly one minute.
I’ve been using this connection for years and have never experienced any issues with it. That includes both regular websites and file-sharing sites like the one I used to upload the file so I could share it with you.

I did some research out of curiosity : the error message is a timeout message from Cloudflare.

From what I understand of the explanations I've found online, the connection timed out because your video took too long to upload to e6ai's server.

15 Mbits/s is quite slow, are you on a dsl line and far away from the DSLAM ?

Also, why are you asking ? I thought you were "done with uploading here" ?

Let's not bring up past drama unnecessarily, it's just not productive for anyone.

Pat, can you try uploading your video to https://catbox.moe/ and use the link from the catbox upload in e6ai's upload page instead of the file itself? I think that should work, although I haven't tried videos using that method tbh. You might have more luck uploading there first.

Tamara,

Please just read the last line of my previous post on this subject and avoid filling this thread with unrelated trolling.

Returning to the topic of this thread:
As I've already explained several times - I have no problem uploading files anywhere else. If the upload is timing out, then the issue is on your side - most likely something involving the parameters or configuration. If necessary, please take it up with Cloudflare or whoever is responsible for that part of the setup and just adjust it to correct values.

I am using a VPN, and it's one of the fastest available. I am not going to browse sites like this without a VPN, so telling me to disable it isn't a practical solution. Again, it works perfectly fine.

The reason I'm continuing to post about this is actually quite simple: I really dislike finding an old forum thread about a problem, only to discover that nobody ever bothered to resolve it. I've already lost a significant amount of my time dealing with this bug. Even if I never upload another file here myself, I would still like to see the issue fixed so that someone else doesn't end up wasting their day on the same problem. And, as I said before, if things here ever change, I'll come back.

For reference, I ran a speed test yesterday and got 19 Mbit/s down and 5 Mbit/s up. I don't remember ever having trouble uploading files five times larger than this 15 years ago, when I was on a 2/0.5 Mbit connection. I also uploaded a 1 GB file around 2013 over an 8/1 Mbit connection without experiencing this kind of problem.

So no, getting a timeout after only a few minutes* while uploading a 75 MB file simply isn't normal and the 100MB limit will probably get increased soon as it clearly is not enough for any longer videos.

One or two attempts may have taken only 1 minute.

I'm not sure I want to make my videos public before I've uploaded them somewhere publicly myself, so I can't say whether your suggestion would actually work. Also, wouldn't downloading from that Catbox site require clicking something first?

In any case, I've already sent the file to the admin/developer over a week ago.

Lastly, I was told that I can't upload this video, and I don't want to anymore. At this point, I really just want the problem itself to be fixed here.

There is no bug. Your connection is too slow and it timed out.

You've been given a possible solution to your issue by dfY6C and for some reason you refuse to try it.

I'm closing the thread, clearly there's no interest in actually finding a solution to your user-side issue.
