Topic: mechanical* BUR

Posted under Tag Alias and Implication Suggestions

The bulk update request #1008 is pending approval.

create alias mechanical_arms (82) -> mechanical_arm (7)
create alias mechanical_legs (34) -> mechanical_leg (3)
create alias mechanical_body (1) -> machine (1892)
create implication mechanical_dragon (22) -> machine (1892)
create implication mechanical_arm (7) -> machine (1892)
create implication mechanical_leg (3) -> machine (1892)

Reason: Mechanical already aliases to machine, the other mechanical* tags should at least imply it.
Having singular and plural version of the same tags serves no purpose and seems to be a typo in several cases, especially for mechanical_leg.

Not sure if mechanical body parts should imply
"machine". Depends on two things really:

  • Is machine body part by itself a machine? Or should that only apply to characters? I'm leaning more on the later.
  • Is an amputee with a machine body part a machine too (like a cyborg?) A prosthetic could be a simple mechanical device that wouldn't make the character a machine as a whole.

Cybernetics implicates Machine, so that would only be coherent.

Though, maybe mechanical_(bodypart) should alias to cybernetic_(bodypart)...

Yeah, but mechanical isn't cybernetics. You can think of that as a more advanced form of machine, that's integrated in a character.

BTW use [[tag]] to generate a wiki link.

Let me give an example:
post #172803

  • Mechanical arm? Yes
  • Machine? No

Another way to think about it is that a mechanical arm is a machine part, but not a machine in itself.

Also I noticed that you have your aliases for plural forms inverted: prefer the singular form (notice how there's only one mechanical
arm in my example).

I see your point. I don't agree, but I understand your point of view.
You haven't answered my question though : you said that 'mechanical isn't cybernetics', so I wanted to know what is, in your opinion, the difference between mechanical and cybernetics ?

Merf, I'll resubmit something later, I can see that my proposal isn't likely to pass.

"Mechanical" includes simple devices without electronics: real world stuff can fall under that category.
While "cybernetics" is advanced electromechanical, and pretty much entirely sci-fi. It's a subset of mechanical, not the other way around.

You can edit a BUR, if I recall correctly.

Ok, updated the aliases to go from plural to singular.

The 4 last lines are incorrect. Now that I've read the wiki, machine is more for non-feral-non-anthro systems. If anything mechanical arm and leg should imply something like bionic; however you can have a scene in a repair shop with mechanical arm being attached to neither a robot or anything alive really. Since it's TWYK, we can't made those implications.

The tag mechanical_body is too vague: is it just the torso? Because if you're talking about a whole body made of machine parts than it's better to use robot, and if not we should use something more specific like mechanical_torso.

The last tag mechanical_dragon should be aliased to dragon. if you have a mechanical dragon you can tag it with robot and dragon. The tag is redundant.
