Topic: Questions about H264 files and resolution requirements for videos

Posted under General

Hi,

I have a 2 questions about the upload rules.

1
H264 supported?

A while ago, H.264 MP4 files weren't allowed here, but after the recent changes, it looks like they might be accepted now. Could someone clarify whether, if I don't get any error messages on the upload page, that means the file is OK to upload?

resolution rules

I also wanted to ask about the resolution rules. In my experience, videos generated by Grok Imagine in a vertical aspect ratio look really good, even when they're named "480p", since the actual resolution is 448×672.

detailed codec info:
4:2:0 YUV H.264 / MPEG-4 AVC (Part 10) (avc1)

I don't think video resolution by itself should decide whether a file is allowed, because compression and overall image quality often matter much more. For example, if I generate a 480p video with some other AI, it looks terrible, and I agree that those files shouldn't be accepted. But if the quality is so good as on my 480p 2:3 files, it would be nice if we could upload those files as they are instead of having to re-encode them or upscale them just to meet the rules.

I think it's becoming pretty obvious that the actual cost behind AI video generation tokens is very high. Over the past few months, we've seen plenty of signs pointing in that direction:

  • Grok Imagine became a few times more expensive per generated video. Free accounts can no longer use image/video features.
  • Sora 2 turned out to be so costly that it was shut down.
  • Even Chinese AI services have been increasing prices on video generation.
  • AI experts keep saying current token pricing is still below the real cost and that video generation is likely to become even more expensive.
  • Even running models locally is getting more expensive as GPU and RAM prices continue to rise.

With that in mind, I hope 448×672 MP4 files of good quality are allowed.

I have no idea about any of the other requirements.
But as far as codecs are concerned: H264 and AV1 are fully supported. H265 is not.

There used to be a bug that prevented mp4 files from being uploaded that nobody told me about.
I fixed it some time ago.

There aren't any minimum resolution requirements for video gens. That rule only affects images, so you should absolutely go with whatever you think looks best!

There are a lot of programs that will upscale the video for you.

But re-encoding ruins quality, so I’m really glad that isn’t necessary.
AI upscaling has its fair share of problems, to say the least.

Re-encoding reduces quality if it's the same video. Since you're upscaling, quality losses from something like Topaz AI are nowhere near the gains.

I’m already spending more on AI than I really can afford, and I’ve heard good things about Topaz, but it’s ridiculously expensive. I’m also not a big fan of what upscalers tend to do sometimes - they often add sharpness and details that aren’t supposed to be there. For example, my character’s fur is often intentionally meant to be a bit softened/blured in some areas.
It’s probably not an issue if you’re going for more popular styles, but I tend to prefer things that are more like a niche within a niche.
