kemono
Japanese for "beast" or "animal" (獣, けもの), this tag is for a specific style of anthropomorphic art associated best with Japan, but may also be found in Korea, China, Taiwan, Thailand, and other parts of Asia. Characters portrayed are usually very "anime" in style, though this can vary. Most notable features include large, human-like eyes and otherwise anime-like expressiveness. A mainstream media example of this style is Sajin Komamura, a character as depicted in Bleach.
While the typical chibi style is more obvious, it's far from the only variation. Some consistent stylistic choices include:
- Large, box-shaped head and snout (often rounded), with more realistic proportions; common with masculine characters and/or canids, dragons, and felids.
- Skinny, pointed faces, similar to the box-faced variant; common with feminine characters, as well as foxes and rodents in particular.
- Smaller, flatter/blunter face with exaggerated facial details (eyes, etc); common with cutesy or chibi characters.
Examples
Box-shaped head and face/snout
Pointed snout
This is not to be confused with kemonomimi, a different Japanese term used to define a different style and level of anthropomorphism. Also not to be confused with kimono, a Japanese garment.
