I felt like doing some more experimentation with NovelAI. Several generations of various prompts composited and partially repainted/touched up over the course of ~6 hours (much less time than my previous composite).
The AI still struggles with over-rendered lines, deformed paws, janky eyes and mouths, and etc., but it's come a lot further since I've last used it. I didn't have to use any img2img this time, though I'm guessing Eevee prompts are much more consistent than slugcat.
