That's just ridiculous... I've been updating tags on them, they weren't even remotely "realistic" looking.

Agreed. It’s BS they were taken down under that reasoning but who am I to complain. Thank you for taking time to update tags. I am grateful for you. Sorry if I don’t tag enough. Not only am I still learning, but there’s more tags than I realize even exist. I’m grateful the site even suggests them when uploading.

It's always good to have the content uploaded somewhere else (eg. on your twitter or catbox.moe or both) and add the URLs to the post source. In case of deletion, anyone can still see it by going to the source links, because the source links never get lost.
