I would even be better if the scientific community was allowed to make them IRL. We have the tech, especially after crispr, but most of the main world deemed it unethical and put the ideas to bed. Adult human augmentation/upgrades is a current goal, which is actually more difficult.

horrible idea, plus we lack a full understanding of how the entire human genome works, it would take pretty long for us to get anywhere and even if we did, what would be the functional purpose? expensive pets? toys? soldiers? slaves? organ harvesting?

You left out companions. Your mind went straight to evil things for some reason. The military would definitely be looking for a super soldier, that's a given. They always have and always will.
Odd fact: countries have already tried human/animal hybridization with the intent to make a super soldier with ...not so in the lab methods decades ago.
