Description

For the community calendar project over at Discord by Soloko, November. And what's celebrating in November? Inventors' day over at Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

Hedy Lamarr, most known for her acting career than her inventions at the time. She was self-taught since she started her acting career when she was young and of course, because she was a beautiful face for the public and a woman, not many took her seriously.

Her scientific mind had been bottled-up by Hollywood but Hughes helped to fuel the innovator in Lamarr, giving her a small set of equipment to use in her trailer on set. While she had an inventing table set up in her house, the small set allowed Lamarr to work on inventions between takes.
Hughes took her to his airplane factories, showed her how the planes were built, and introduced her to the scientists behind process. Lamarr was inspired to innovate as Hughes wanted to create faster planes that could be sold to the US military. She bought a book of fish and a book of birds and looked at the fastest of each kind. She combined the fins of the fastest fish and the wings of the fastest bird to sketch a new wing design for Hughes’ planes. Upon showing the design to Hughes, he said to Lamarr, “You’re a genius.”

Guess not having formal studies made her think outside the box for certain inventions.

Antheil passed away in 1959, the year their patent for the “Secret Communication System” expired. In his 1945 memoir, Antheil wrote about Lamarr:

The Hedy whom we know is not the Hedy you know. You know something which the M.G.M. publicity department has, in all its cunning, dreamed up. There is no such Hedy. … Hedy is very, very bright. Compared to most Hollywood actresses we know, Hedy is an intellectual giant.

She co-invented an early frequency-hopping communication system for torpedoes whose concept anticipated techniques used in later wireless technologies, like Bluetooth.
But it wasn't used during war because it wasn't practical for how they designed torpedoes at the time.

And also invented a soluble cola flavored tablet for the military.

It's a shame she wasn't that recognized during her prime but much, much later, and almost became dirt poor if it wasn't for Corel fucking up a marketing campaign by using her face in the boxes of CorelDraw without her permission because they thought she was already dead, lmao.
Also her favorite dessert was ice-cream soda, first time I've heard of it but my teeth didn't like that combo, even if it sounds delicious.

Then there's Lamarr, the headcrab of Half-Life 2 just prowling around. Had to install gmod and pose him since the model doesn't know what a headcrab is lol.

The drawings are her patents for that not-so Secret Communication System, except the drawings of the concept for the plane, tried to look everywhere if it existed anything besides oral accounts but nah.
