Description

The 1932 morale photoshoot wasn't the first nude photoshoot that Miriam Hayes was in, but it was the first she consented to.

These candid shots were taken in 1914, when the 18-year-old Private Hayes was in basic training before being shipped off to Gallipoli. She kept them secret for most of her life, having stolen the camera that was used for them so its contents wouldn't be leaked.

The camera was rediscovered in 1985, when the now-elderly Hayes was sorting out her estate. She granted permission for the photos to be published with the rest of her modeling portfolio.
"I forgot all about those," she said. "The bloke who took them wanted to blackmail me. Not much point hiding from that wanker now, though — he didn't even come back from the trenches."

(By the way, I know Australia didn't allow women in its military at that time. She wasn't in the Australian Defence Force, though — she was in the Emu Legion.)
