Description
Salandra the Gelatinous Kobold!
They are a created race, not a natural one.
They are created by assembling a kobold skeleton & then carving runes on the inside of the skull. When powered with magic, this gives them life and they create a gel to cover the bones.
They can replace every bone in their body, or go without, but they need their skull. The runes are basically their brain or soul.
Their body is a lot less sturdy without bones, however.
If the skull is removed from their body, the body goes inert, and their consciousness goes with the skull.
They can be returned to their body, or have a new body built, so long as their skull, and the runes inside of it, are undamaged.
Edit: Here's the lore I have made thus far:
They were created by mages to do menial work.
Mostly by assembling a kobold skeleton & etching runes onto the inside of the skull. Those runes give them life.
After rising up against the mages about 4-5 generations ago, they raided the mage's towers to learn how they were created.
Since the runes inside the skull give them life, they firmly believe a soul is created when the runes are inscribed on the skull. Much how a soul is created upon conception, in biological races.
They also view the runes inside their skull as their soul or their brain; If the skull is destroyed, or the runes irreparibly marred; They die, and their soul is freed.
Since they are aware they are a young race, they take pains to avoid being seen as evil or dangerous, and trade for bones instead of stealing them or killing kobolds for them.
Because they know almost any other race could wipe them out.
The can exist without any bones (Except the skull).
If the skull is removed from their body; Their awareness stays with the skull, and the body goes inert until the skull is returned.
A new body can be created for them by placing the proper bones. While they can exist without bones (Just in a less stregthened state. Think...Half their normal carry limit), they need bones to form a new body over.
Since they are sentient and thus mentally and emotionally mature over time and experiences; They gain the ability control more of their gel when they hit older ages (IE: Puberty, & adulthood), so they will replace smaller bones with larger bones to make a bigger body. Thus, they grow.
When they want a family, they assemble a new body and carve the proper runes into the skull.
They are 100% aware of what they are, and how they are formed from dead kobolds. But they view it as no different than a biological race needing meat to survive. And they're not even killing anything to get the bones.
It's safe to say their consciousness is the runes & skull, and their body is the gel. The bones are just for support/reenforcement.
They can eat, though the food just dissolves away. They love tasting new things.
They go out of their way to be helpful, as they don't want to be viewed as a threat, but they also make sure other races know they will not be enslaved again.
Being gelatinous means they don't have to eat. But they love to.
They also don't have to breathe, which makes them good for mapping dangerous areas.
They were created to mine by the mages, as broken bones can be removed and replaced, crushed limbs can be removed and replaced, and cave-ins don't matter when they don't have to breathe & they can get through any hole their skull can fit through.
They did not really live to adulthood while enslaved, given how dangerous mining would be in a low-tech world & the mages not caring about safety. So they only recently (A few generations ago) realized how they could 'grow up' and make larger bodies.
They don't know if they have to use kobold bones for the creation process to work, but seeing as most other races' bones would be too large or too small for scale with a kobold skull; They stick with kobold bones.
They tend to hire themselves out as wilderness explorers/cartographers, guards (A guard that does not have to eat or sleep is useful!), and builders.
They are curious to a fault, being a young race, but not stupid.
As being enslaved is still fresh in their minds as a race; They have a strong sense of justice. They experienced something evil and decided to rise above it instead of falling to its level.
The gel of their bodies becomes inert when removed from their skull's influence. It's pretty magically reactive (I mean, it's magically formed and controlled, after all), and apparently a good lubricant for machinery.
Though they view using a part of themselves like that the same way a human would if someone said 'My ballista is oiled by human blood'.
It is safe to say they don't have a religion yet.
They did not have one when enslaved, and they freed themselves.
That's not to say they deny the gods existing; They just have not picked any to worship, as they feel that is a little too close to how the mages viewed themselves compared to the gel-bolds.
They're perfectly happy to hear about other races gods.
They won't make other races using the same method in which they make more gel-bolds; They would view that as playing god and being too much like the mages.
They view making more gel-bolds as procreation & the survival of their species.
