Boring tech details for nerds, lots of text but might be useful for your projects

I'm labeling this release experimental because it's of lower resolution than my other projects and it uses some new tricky techniques, nevertheless the quality is still very high.

You might have heard of Soft Inpainting to achieve better blending of inpainted regions but it still introduces artifacts albeit to a lower extent. Experienced people grab the inpainted area then additionally mask it by hand in an image editor trying to eliminate the remaining seams, glitches and inconsistencies.

When you are preparing multiple Edits/Variants of a single picture, combining inpainted areas might become a pain because they carry a bit of their surrounding. What I did for my numerous edits is deriving the changes done by inpainting. This gives a decently clean 'delta' with just the pixels changed on a transparent background. Here's how to do it in GIMP: create an isolated layer group in GIMP, put three layers there in the following order:
- Layer group
\--- Base for inpainting (as in the picture before sketching and inpainting), Mode: Color Erase
\--- Inpainted image, Mode: Normal
\--- Temp background, I use some random dark color, Mode: Normal

All other layers must be disabled for the time being.

Use the Eraser tool with a very smoothed brush preset, and after around 5 minutes you've got a super clean PNG overlay with your changes. Disable the temp background and Export Visible pixels. This will leave you with a standalone merged layer you could then reimport as layer and further improve it (color correction, slight transparency tweaks, warp and so on).
