remove implication north_american_cougar (2) -> cougar (596)
remove implication south_american_cougar (0) -> cougar (596)
remove implication siberian_tiger (3) -> tiger (2746)
remove implication bengal_tiger (17) -> tiger (2746)
remove implication african_leopard (0) -> leopard (676)
remove implication amur_leopard (2) -> leopard (676)
remove implication javan_leopard (0) -> leopard (676)
create alias mountain_lion (11) -> cougar (596)
create alias catamount (0) -> cougar (596)
remove alias florida_panther (0) -> north_american_cougar (2)

See dfY6C reply below for part 2.

Reason:

  • Feline subspecies are overly specific and depiction are almost never accurate enough to even make them worth distinguishing. Most of them are really hard to tell apart unless you're an expert. The lists are very incomplete, most of them are already aliases. Just remove the current ones.
  • Add more common names for cougars (it's a species with many different regional names), some are already in use

Part 2

alias north_american_cougar -> cougar
alias south_american_cougar -> cougar
alias florida_panther -> cougar
alias siberian_tiger -> tiger
alias bengal_tiger -> tiger
alias african_leopard -> leopard
alias amur_leopard -> leopard
alias javan_leopard -> leopard

There so much of those subspecies implications, it's going to be a large undertaking to standardize all tags if we take the road of simplification

It's probably easier then to take it one family at a time then. But what bothers me most about the felid subspecies is which are implications and which are aliases (if any) is completely arbitrary. "tiger" is the worst culprit, it has a lot of subspecies aliases but for whatever reason two of them are implications.

That's because most of them aren't actual subspecies, but the implications are. Basically no one would know that a maltese tiger is a blue-furred tiger & there's no evidence any real ones exist, so it should just be tagged as tiger blue_fur. Same concept for the rest. However, a Bengal tiger & a Siberian tiger are visually distinct, widely known, & actually real tiger subspecies.

Whether or not that should be preserved here I've no input on, but that's the reason for the AIBURs on e621, which are mirrored here.

create alias north_american_cougar (2) -> cougar (596)
create alias south_american_cougar (0) -> cougar (596)
create alias florida_panther (0) -> cougar (596)
remove alias white_siberian_tiger (0) -> siberian_tiger (3)
create alias bengal_tiger (17) -> tiger (2746)
create alias african_leopard (0) -> leopard (676)
create alias amur_leopard (2) -> leopard (676)
create alias javan_leopard (0) -> leopard (676)

Reason: DRLa's Part 2/Followup

EDIT: When I first posted this, I had the line alias siberian_tiger -> tiger in it but it had an error over blocking transitives because siberian_tiger has an alias for white_siberian_tiger on it. I've edited this BUR to instead have an unalias for white_siberian_tiger to fix that transitive error and then followup with the final result that DRLa wanted.

Followup

alias siberian_tiger -> tiger
alias white_siberian_tiger -> tiger
