smartphone

Smartphone describes a cellphone that is essentially a pocket-sized computer. Most modern smartphones are thin, rectangular devices, with a full face touch screen for controlling the device and one or more cameras on the device's rear face.

Smartphones combine the functionalities of a personal digital assistant, camera, handheld console, and portable music player, in addition to the abilities to browse the internet, watch and record videos, and use applications (often referred to as "apps").

Tagging Notes
  • Older smartphones may feature physical buttons at the bottom of the phone's touch screen for navigation and calling, some may even have full QWERTY keyboards
    • Depending on design, older smartphones should also be tagged as bar phone — see page for details
  • As long as a science fiction device is clearly a futuristic, advanced, or alien analog of a smartphone, the device should be tagged as a smartphone
  • Smartphones and tablet computers should not be confused, while visually similar, tablet computers are inherently much larger devices
