solar eclipse

An astronomical event where one celestial body passes between another and the sun, significantly obscuring the latter in whole or in part depending on the exact alignment of the bodies.
Most commonly occurs in art with the Moon and the Earth, but it can occur with fictional planets/moons/suns.

Types of solar eclipse

Total eclipse - when the Sun is entirely blocked by the eclipsing body. The Sun's corona and other stars are visible, and the terrain is dark (if applicable).
Partial eclipse - when the Sun is not entirely blocked by the eclipsing body and appears as a crescent.
Annular eclipse - when the Sun is not entirely blocked by the eclipsing body and appears as a ring around the eclipsing body.
Solar transit - when the body blocking the sun is too small to be visible to the unaided eye; in the case of Earth, this could be Mercury or Venus.
