greatsword

A greatsword, as the name suggests, is essentially a large sword; typically about as tall as its wielder. Because of this, the term is relative to the wielder’s size (ex.: A goblin's greatsword is just a dagger to a giant).

Tactical Analysis

Advantages
  • Longer reach compared to a regular sword.
  • Greater damage potential due to its inherent weight.
  • Effective for crowd control and area denial thanks to its wide, sweeping slashes and powerful thrusts.
  • Intimidating presence on the battlefield.
  • Provides broader blocking coverage than a regular sword.
Disadvantages
  • Less effective in reach compared to true polearms like spears.
  • Large and heavy, making it cumbersome to carry and difficult to maneuver.
  • Longer wind-up time between swings and thrusts due to its size and mass.
  • Missing a strike leaves the wielder open to counterattacks.
  • Less effective in extreme close-quarters fighting.
