under shade

A character under shadow cast from blocked sunlight or, very rarely, a different bright light source. Shade is often sought for some relief from intense sunlight to hopefully allow one's body to cool down, particularly their head.

Some objects and structures are intended to provide shade and other mild relief from the elements, like a beach umbrella or awning, but a character can use anything for improvised shade, like a large shadow from a tree or building or even a larger character.

Tagging Guidance

The art does not need to depict the thing casting shade, but the setting, direction of lighting, and shadow patterns should at least convey:

  • an area that is exposed to a bright, major light source with...
  • a character within that area who would be completely exposed to that light, but...
  • that character is meaningfully screened from that light somehow.

Note that a backlit character may appear under shade when their body blocks a bright light source behind them and casts a shadow toward the viewer, but that character likely is not themself under shade.

Semantically, the interior contents of buildings are not usually considered to provide shade. A possible exception is a character lingering around a doorway or cave entrance just before the reach of direct sunlight. Another exception is window shade casting a significant shadow on a character while still permitting some light inside.
