compound eyes

Compound eyes, commonly seen in Arthropods such as insects and crustaceans, may consist of thousands of individual photoreceptor lenses which in themselves form the compound eyes. Compound eyes, when compared to simple eyes, can have enhanced abilities such as possessing large viewing angles and the ability to detect fast movement.

Compound eyes are also present occasionally in worms and bivalves.

Not to be confused with:

  • multi_eye, as compound eyes are individual lenses and rods making up the surface of a single eye and aren't multiple eyes inherently.
