Meta: watermark

A watermark is a visible overlay on an artwork or a photo consisting of text, a logo, or a copyright notice. The typical purpose of a watermark is to identify the work and discourage its unauthorized use. They will often point directly to a particular website for the viewer to visit.

Watermarks are a rather misunderstood part of the art world. Done properly, they can help fans identify the director of a work among other information without distracting from the work. Done wrong, they can mask or interfere with the director's work to a point where the watermark attracts the eye more than the art itself does.
