emanata

Lines, marks, or other symbols drawn around (that is, emanating from) a character, usually their head, indicating things such as shock, surprise, or anger. Emanata can also be found in other places, such as squiggly lines wafting out from a freshly-baked pie, or short lines surrounding a shiny object or character. Commonly found in comics.

Note that emanata are symbolic for an action or emotion; physical objects that are actually emitted are not emanata (unless the emanata are explicitly reified, usually for comedic effect). For example, small drops of sweat that are shaken off by a character are not emanata, whereas large iconographic drops that seem to spontaneously fly off an otherwise still character probably are.

Fundamentally, emanata are visual indicators for feelings and sensations. They should not be confused with simple motion lines which purely serve to indicate movements.
