Scales are rigid plate-like growths that arise from the dermal structures of the body and are made for defense. Scales come in many forms and sizes with fish scales generally being circle or half-moon shaped while reptile scales tend to take on angular geometric shapes but may also be pebbled shaped. Scale tend to be large in areas of that may often be exposed to stress and pressure while scales around joints tend to be smaller to allow for mobility. Scales are among the most diverse of all body surface in both form and color. Most common among Reptiles, Fish and Dragons, some mammals may also feature scales.
