Description
Trichromatic
This artwork took approximately 8 hours to create from scratch.
The background was rendered in mandelbulber2 (Free/Libre Open Source Software) with the "Menger Sponge" base preset, custom materials and lighting. Rendering the final variant with Ray Marshing took around 25 minutes of continuous 100% CPU load. The background was programmed to have only shades of gray, the only post-processing I did against it was slightly decreasing its brightness to match the Otter girl.
However, there are two independent renders on this image (so it took much more rendering time in total) -- the outermost face of the fractal was rendered with no lighting applied at all because I wanted it to be of a solid color instead of having a vignette-style lighting/shading effect.
Otter was rendered from a hand-drawn sketch with img2img mode, then I upscaled it to 4K and kept adding fine details. It took 15 inpaints in total. The background from the otter picture was removed manually (it took approx. 1.5 hours) as my favorite BiRefNet program required way too much VRAM than I had. Shadows around (and on) the girl were also drawn manually.
Otter was sketched and prompted to be albino but the AI is imperfect so I post-processed the girl with B&W filter in GIMP. Then I returned the colors back to her juicy bits. These are the only colored areas in the whole image. Everything else is shades of gray. Despite the limited color palette the image you see right there is still around 25 MB in size due to 16-bit colorspace being used (instead of the usual 8-bit that is common for AI-generated images) to achieve smoother color transitions on the backdrop.
